The anthem of the Estonian SSR was written by Johannes Semper, with Gustav Ernesaks composing the music. Adopted in 1945, it underwent a modification in 1956, eliminating references to the former Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Estonia maintained this anthem until 1990 when they reverted to their previous one after leaving the Soviet Union.
