Opals, with their shifting play of colors, have long been regarded as stones of mystery, magic, and prophecy. In ancient Rome, they were called the "queen of gems," believed to contain the beauty of all other gemstones within their iridescent depths. In Arabian mythology, opals were said to fall from the sky in flashes of lightning, imbuing them with celestial energy. The Greeks thought opals granted foresight and protected against illness, while some European traditions saw them as symbols of luck and love. However, in later centuries, a superstition arose that opals brought misfortune unless worn by those born in October.
