Additional combinations I've recently done:

[ Electric Piano + Vibraphone ] or [ Grand Piano + Vibraphone ] - Produces a pleasant and crisp chorus effect on your Piano notes.
[ Bass + 8-Bit Triangle ] - Gives the Bass a boost in volume and sustain, as well as makes the Bass notes more defined. You'd want to make the Bass' volume dominant over the 8-Bit Triangle, though. Can be used as a Fretless Bass substitute.
Scifi + Music Box
Scifi + Electric Piano
The bottom 808 kick drum + Electric kick drum 1
Electric snare 1 + 2 (Can also add the clap)
Splash cymbal + Ride cymbal 2 or 1
Sawtooth + Square (Add the square later for sidechain effect)
Triangle (reverb) + Synth pluck
Flute + Violin + Very quiet smooth synth
Electric guitar + Distortion guitar (slightly low volume)
- makes for a better distortion guitar imo

My personal crash combo:
Crash Cymbals 2 + 1 + Splash cymbal + Chinese Cymbal (Regular Drum Kit) (Volume: 3.5)
having the triangle and the sawtooth together, with the saw tooth at 80% volume while having reverb and triangle at 115% volume sounds like a synth brass
8 bit sine (with reverb) + Flute (reverb and pseudo sustain) makes for a good choir sound, also, adding pseudo sustain smooth synth with reverb makes it sound better too!

make sure to mess with the volume a little too, to give it an authentic sound
scifi + grand piano + reverb=  Relief

also jazz guitar (quiet) + electric piano + reverb is nice

mess around with volume

But I think most non-wind instruments work well with Smooth Synth. Also, the new features delay and reverb add new combinations to the repertoire.
How do you add reverb/delay?
if you are doing 8 bit and need an extra instrument, you can use the  bit square and copy it then skip an octave above or below to make it sound like a trance gate, example: C4 and C6.
you can also do this with 8 bit sine/ 8 bit triangle and get a rock organ sound. doing C4, C5, C6 with 8 bit triangle or sine will give a slightly different rock organ sound
for 8 bit square set 1 note for c4, one note on the same plane as g4, another for c5 and another for e5 and you got your self a sans gutair sound and you can copy and paste so you can make megalo rips, top off the 8 bit square with the 8 bit sawtooth at 25% volume to make it sound even better, here is an example ->
