Well that'd kinda defeat the point, plus there's already plenty of free DAWs out there

OS is already a software?? Its certainly not hardware.
Free DAWs I recommend: https://ardour.org https://reaper.fm https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk
Free DAWs I don't recommend: LMMS, Bandlab, Audacity, Soundtrap
Many commercial DAWs havefree trial versions, worth trying. The free DAWs I recommend are used in many high end professional recording studios, they do everything most commercial DAWs do. You aren't missing out on much by not buying ProTools or FLStudio. Its all about workflow

There used to be an offline version of OS that you could drag back into your browser - and even when the internet is down or the site is down, it still works as intended. I'm not sure if there is an updated version of the file though. I personally have not used it much for a while.
Anyway, that's kinda maybe relevant, ig.
