Is it possible to apply some sort of "telephone effect" to the instruments/notes? I assume there might be a way by configuring the Equalizer however i was messing around a bit and could not seem to acheive the effect, but i might  just not be doing something right.

... for a song im covering? some of the instruments just have an effect like that so i would like to emulate it.

I have tried doing this "degradation" effect using EQ. Have only tried it using drums though. With EQ, try using roughly -26 high, 10 mid, and -14 low. Don't know if this helps, but it's something.
The android quality effect is somewhat like the telephone effect:

Turn instrumment volume to 1%
Set MID EQ to Max

And boom
