Looking for help - Bob99 - 11-23-2018

Hi.

I am going to make a game franchise.

I am really excited about it, but unfortunately, I am stuck on the music part of it. LucentTear said that my CPU probably doesn't work well with 8-bit sounds (which seems to be the only sounds that work for my game, both matching the graphics and getting the right feel). Second of all, I am pretty new here and like I said I am really excited about it so I don't feel like taking the time to get used to the software so my music doesn't sound very nice. I was thinking of getting help from someone with more experience and a better CPU.

First, let me tell you about the game.

It's going to be a big franchise of retro-style platformer games with pixel graphics. It is (somewhat) placed in the year 4721 and you play as a teenaged girl named Matilda who has a time machine. Did I tell you that there are no desserts in 4721? Matilda's time machine has a "news" system that can detect desserts in the past (Say like there was a cafe in 1990 that served cheesecake as Thursday's dessert special, and the time machine would secretly detect that cheesecake on Thursday and notify Matilda so she can go to 1990 and find the cheesecake).

I said it is somewhat placed in the year 4721. Why somewhat? Because in each individual episode, it is a few different years. You never actually get to play in the year 4721, that's just the time that Matilda comes from.

Now, I shall explain what I want my feel to be.

I want the player to hear the music and feel like they're playing an old game from the late 1980's or some year like that. But I have a hard time capturing that feel in music with this software. Do you think you could help me?

If you do agree to help me, thank you and good luck in advance Wink Smile

Sure I'll help

Awesome, thanks! Could you send me a link when you're finished with our music?  Also does  OS let you  insert attachments from your computer?

Did I mention that I would have 3 chapters per episode? Chapter 1 is going to be a meadow, chapter 2 is going to be underground, and chapter 3 is going to be a small city/town, like this one I found on Google:

Right now I am focusing on chapter 1, so I guess you could start on that.

If you are trying to make an indie game with 8-bit sounds, I recommend Bosca Ceoil.
Resources:

Examples of what I have done with it because I gotta have those #shamelessplugs:

Feel free to use Online Sequencer though, it is better at creating melodies that Bosca Ceoil in my opinion.

Thank you, Frank!

And Alex, I found out how to insert attachments. This is the format for my chapter 1:

Where did my attachment go?

RE: Looking for help - Bob99 - 11-24-2018

I figured it out, I think.

You're right. On OS, it sounds different on the software than in the actual MIDI. Although with Bosca Ceoil, I did a test and it sounded EXACTLY the same. Thanks again!

Sondfont wise for LMMS or FL studio I personally recommend SGM v2.01, Megadrive Soundfont, 8-bit SF2, Earthbound Soundfont. LMMS also has a NES synthesizer. Those are my go-to's for game style soundtrack.
Even when I kept changing my mind on making a classic style video game I still enjoyed making the music.

It seems like you've got a lot of years to work with here...

Like, I can't say much about the ancient times (or any years before the Common Era/CE/AD), as my research has not been able to find any modern sweets/desserts in ancient times. Even the oldest texts available are lacking as far as the mentioning the names of special foods/sweet goods.
(However, I would still suggest that you research about this, as the ancient Greeks and ancient Romans and Egyptians may have had special culinary treats/desserts at some time or another.)

But basic research indicates that modern desserts have roots at least starting in the 9th century, which gives you a huge timeline to work with, as well as a large variety of cultures associated with each food item (which, in turn, would mean you have a ton of different styles of music that you could incorporate into the game), this ranging from about the years 800 to 3000 AD! (Give or take quite a few years!)

Also can this time machine travel through space perchance? If so I'd recommend looking at this.
