Can you record notes to a sequence using the built-in keyboard

I was tryna make a sequence with the general sounds of keyboard smash with the mouse, but when I pressed the record button, and clicked on the keyboard, it didn't record anything. Am I being stupid and just doing it wrong? Is it not possible?
