I find that the grid system needs work. There needs to be more note lengths instead of just 1/2-1/16. Also you can only place the 1/2 notes like this |O|-|O|-|, the lines separate the grid spaces, O- is the half note. You can only place the 1/2 notes every 2nd space, where you should be able to place them just like 1/4 notes.

You can tweak with the java console though (look up in experiments) to get 3/1 notes or whatever to do things like this :
onlinesequencer.net/152629 . Changing lenght could be way easier however (and getting 5/4 or 3/2 grids too)
