Earlier today, Online Sequencer was hit with a flurry of legal action from UMG and WMG, including demands to take down a significant portion of the website's sequences and for stricter moderation of all user created sequences going forward. The consensus between the mod team and Jacob is that we cannot reasonably enforce these demands at the moment. Since they were made under threat of immediate and severe legal action, we are forced to sadly shut down the website for the foreseeable future to protect ourselves.

This is just as difficult a decision for us to make as it is for you to hear. Information available to the mod team is still incomplete, and we will provide updates in the discord as we receive them. For now, what we do know is that you have until 12pm PDT tomorrow, April 2nd, to back up your sequences locally before our servers shut down and you risk losing them forever. We are deeply sorry to make this decision, but our hand has been forced.

It's been a great 12 years of sequencing online. We hope your music careers continue to flourish elsewhere.

Alongside the upcoming changes, I have created a moderation document to help standardize moderator activities and clearly establish their responsibilities as a part of the Online Sequencer staff.

By providing a standard procedure, we hope to handle our usual tasks as mods more efficiently—while allowing regular users to have a better chance of speaking up against mods that may be abusing their power.


The standardization guide currently covers moderator recruitment and guidelines to a couple of moderation powers. In the future, I will write an ethics guide that goes into detail with how moderators should procedurally respond to users that are misbehaving and provide tips towards refining their professional conduct in general. As this guide is being constantly updated, moderators will be expected to follow up on the ever-changing procedures.




Another common concern is that moderators in the past have been nominated due to their popularity/favoritism versus their actual ability to make worthwhile contributions to the site's community.

To counter this, I have also created a moderator application form in order to recruit fresh talent to our staff! If you are a longtime user of Online Sequencer that's always wanted to become a part of the moderation team—now is your chance to apply!


Before you fill out anything, please note that your account must be at least 2 years old, and that your account must have 300 sequences -OR- at least 1,000 views on one sequence. And yes, I will actually check if your account meets these requirements.

We've recently held a public discussion on Discord over how we can improve the community space inside website chat. We will now make conscious efforts to turn the Online Sequencer community into a more welcoming and thoughtfully engaging place to discuss music and other subfield topics.

There are two points I would like to touch base with—asking the community for help and introducing upcoming security features.



We need your support!

The current staff works hard to make sure the sequencer stays peaceful and to de-escalate issues that may occur. We also frequently reform the official rules to make sure they are relevant and up-to-date.

However, our efforts alone are not enough to change the kinds of interactions taking place on the chat. We cannot continue to hand out repercussions to misbehaving users and expect good behavior to come out of it.

Instead, we believe that promoting good behavior starts from the core of the community, and that we should slowly alter the way in which we communicate with others on a daily basis.

Our main goal is to reduce inappropriate content on the chat. This is a music community first and foremost and that conversation should ideally be about Online Sequencer or other music-related topics.

We are going to be more strict around sexual topics as they have no place on the site. From now on, please refrain and encourage others to refrain from using certain vocabulary on the chat. If you are unsure what "certain vocabulary" entails, please contact me and I will let you know what isn't allowed. Otherwise, we will now enforce a 30-minute mute policy every time someone mentions something inappropriate.

Moreover, if you feel that the chat is derailing, try to refocus the conversation topic back to Online Sequencer! This is the most effective method of calming the chat.

- Ask about someone's favorite sequence.
- Talk about your favorite instrument combinations or site features.
- How did you first find about Online Sequencer?

It takes collective initiative to change the overall behavior of the community. If you enjoy using Online Sequencer, please support our cause! Be the person that you are willing to talk to and support each other!



Improved Security Measures

We occasionally add new security features to deter misconduct on the site. Our most notable updates include the 5-second chat cooldown and the 24-hour chat restriction for new accounts. These have helped in discouraging spam and preventing alt accounts from becoming problematic.

We have decided on these new features:

In addition to the 24-hour restriction...

- Users will be required to read the website rules before proceeding.

- Users will also be required to post a thread to the Introduce Yourself subforum.

- This will affect users who have joined before the update, but have not posted to this subforum. Please post a self-introduction in advance!


Other Quality of Life Updates
- The in-progress Vote Mute feature will let regular users use a chat command to mute a misbehaving user for 30 minutes after a specified vote count. The Vote Mute feature will also notify admins about the user similarly to the !911 command. We are still deciding on the number of votes required to successfully vote mute a user.

- We are also figuring out how to prevent muted users from whispering others on the site. The actual logistics are still unknown.

Many of you know that I have a full time job as a software engineer, and I've been dividing my time between that and working on new features for OS. I think we've added some cool stuff in my time here, and it's been really rewarding to see what people do with it in the space race. But my job related work has been suffering, and it's time for me to focus on that.

Unfortunately I have some life matters to attend to and from this point on I have to be fully committed to studying in college. I feel that OS distracts me too much from what I have to do and for once I want to be responsible for my future.

Well, I usually don’t show it in the chat, but for the longest time I’ve had personal problems with some of the people here and often I felt that it would be better if I left. I acknowledge that the site in general has some infrastructural problems within the community and I feel a bit responsible (since back then I was responsible for the activity on the site).

I came to a realization that some of my behavior on the chat has influenced people negatively and I guess I should apologize for that. Not that it matters now, it’s been a problem for years and some of the people I should say sorry to are long gone.

I don’t have any future plans of updating the Lucent Tutorial as it’s also time-consuming for my schedule. But thank you to all of those who read and support the tutorial. It means a lot to me.

I’m going to ask Jacob to demod me so I’m not so tempted to return to the site as a moderator. Maybe I will come back every now and then to say hi, but I’m not going to have long visits.

I don’t regret any time I’ve spent here. I hope I’ve made a difference for the time I’ve been here. Stay safe and happy sequencing.

I have been noticing a lot more spam content surfacing on the forums. I am aware that there are a lot of pre teens and immature people on this site that use the chat and all that, however, I would like to see a better standard at least on the forums. 

Forums are for one more public, its meant for more in depth conversations and announcements, as well as a place of smart and informative content. 

I personally feel that the way we use the forums really does need work, think before you make a thread.

I get that life can feel like it's out of your control and that you need friends to talk in order to overcome your problems. In the future, I recommend discussing these in private with another person through the chat whisper command (@name) or by using Forum PMs.

Do not make a habit of announcing your problems in public. While I hope you guys find supportive people on here, relaying your problems in public obligates everyone to respond to what you say. This causes a lot of unneeded tension between people who want to be helpful and people who would rather discuss something else.



I'd also like to make a formal apology on my behalf as a moderator. What's important to know is that people undergo different experiences to make them who they are now.

Understandably, not everyone can agree with the way I interact with others, but please don't take this personally. Many people (including me) don't have a lot of emotional patience and have different viewpoints on how to tackle a situation in real life.

At the end of the day, the moderators lean towards handling situations as efficiently as possible, even if it's unfair. It's ultimately our job to keep the chat as usable as possible and there are times that it's difficult to do this in a diplomatic fashion. Moving forward, I hope we can respect each other a little bit more and keep OS a realistic place.

For those who are aware of what I'm talking about, this isn't the first time that OS has banned for... long distance relationships.

I can't stop you from having one, but please be aware of what you are getting into, especially if you're underage. What you do can also affect the owners of the platform you're using, in this case, Online Sequencer. As dumb as it may sound, we REALLY don't want this site to shut down because we broke the law.

To better facilitate this, we will be launching an app to help you find people who compose in a compatible musical style. Improved Collaboration
We've noticed an increase in collaborative composition, which is great to see. To better facilitate this, we will be launching an app to help you find people who compose in a compatible musical style. When two members mutually agree that they would be a good fit, they'll be able to access private voice and video chat to make it easier to work together.* Here is a prototype screenshot of the UI, based on similar apps that have achieved success for other use cases.

This is probably the single, most worst event that has ever occurred to the internet, and has made it the worst day in the entire history of the internet.

Small channels and content creators all over the web, like my own, will be wiped out by the new laws. Such websites as YouTube have stated that they will not allow anybody within the EU to upload anything onto their platform, many other sites will most likely follow suit to this trend. Content creation is one step closer to being completely *****ed.

I'd suggest you guys raise awareness to the issue and cause a bigger uproar to the problem at hand. We need them to realise that what they're doing isn't "protecting copyright laws", it is *****ing the world wide web up completely, in the present, and the forseeable future. The government officials have zero idea what they are doing, and how this will effect the internet as an entirety.

Furthermore, if you live outside of the EU, do not back down and go into a "I don't care" state. This colossal change to the internet will also effect you. Most websites, such as YouTube, use the strictest laws in a given area as their entire security and rule system, as this is easier to do, and makes it easier to uphole the laws of the stricter areas. Thus, this will effect you. There is no doubt about it.

The internet is screwed if we do nothing.

We need to band together to stop this.
