The part about percussion was very helpful. I've been using percussion more in my sequences, and it sounds better than I thought it would. It just takes practice.
I know reverb works on psytrance kicks, but you have to layer it and not reverb the low end. Works really well when at a bush doofs/raves and the reverb of the kick reverb is reverbing of the trees and hills. Sounds like it is calling your name.... trippy
As someone who tries to get into music composition / production since 2018 with gaps - and still feel like closer to beginner, I definetely feel the "Reverb Overload" part, especially since dungeon synth is one of the genres I'm most fond of - and that kind of music can lead to surreal levels of reverb use very easily even in cases where it sounds good and neccessary.
Since I'm a gamer and love retro stuff as well (just played Eye Of The Beholder some days ago, and now Antaresian Legacy for Doom II), MIDI music was something that always hit close to home yet didn't try it enough. One of the mistake that slowed my progress and bottlenecked me during the years was maybe the fact I was overwhelmed with the range of VSTs and DAWs I can access...
Maybe restricting myself to the range of instruments in MIDI for a while - especially on a site like this, where I can check, edit and learn from other's works - can finally give me the experience I wanted.
