Ghost/Muted Notes on guitar

Does anyone have a good way of replicated ghost or muted notes on a guitar? A lot of funky guitar rhythms need the kind of continuous energy brought from muted notes without actually playing any notes. Right now I'm looking for a good answer for muted notes on clean guitar, but I really mean for any guitar.
