Crescendos-

Hey guys! I'm new here, and am not very familiar with most of the mechanics. I am in band, and I know that dynamics is an important part of music, but if I may ask; does anyone know how to crescendo?

I am aware of it's existence, but is it possible to do an active crescendo, or is this it? (Sorry if this looks odd. Again, not used too this.)
