Most instruments have a default sustain that plays out no matter how long or short the note is
The instruments that do have variable sustain are the 8-bit, electric guitar, Clean guitar,, Flute, Grand and Electric piano (not the classic variants), and any of the instruments that have Sustain in the name. If that happens with one of these then idk what the problem is
Only the newer sustain instruments can record sustain, you just have to release the sustain and the rest of the sustain length will show, all will note lengthen even if they don't sustain if they are recorded with a MIDI instrument keyboard
