Listen to gene krupa on drums from Bobby Darin's big band swing billboard charting classic "somewhere beyond The Sea" and also bill kruetzman either drumming himself with the Grateful Dead or along with Mickey Hart. Bill was a natural at drumming jazz, he had all the offbeat snare/rim shots along with offbeat 16th note double kicks on most of the jams the Grateful Dead liked to extend to their. crowd. remember jazz is very complex yet can be simple to play, all relates on how your style of jazz is and how experienced in the instrument and genre you are aiming for so offbeat and unconventional breakdowns and bridges are the key elements to creating anything in the style of jazz. its very much like swings and big band only its more improvisational and unorthodoxed in composition and timing than any genre alongside ragtime, black metal( yes this genre is probably the most unorthodoxed genre derived from classical music and blues scales in Em tuning and in Bm tunings and more) and classical compositions than both big band and swing mentioned jazz was created and found from stoned swing and big band musicians just playing a groove and having fun. that's rule #1. You gotta have fun no matter the difficulty of your goal is. music is hard and not everyone can have such ability to play, play what you know then re evaluate where you can change timings, beats, break down a groove and so on but not where you normally would. try 6/4 timing and if you can 7/8. even mixing the two time signatures in a song can will bring a jazzy and awesome song if done with hard work and practice. try learning paradiddles and rudiments if your planning to drum and flatten the kicks and toms by tuning lower on your skins and tune a little tighter on the snare bring more of a "pop" use 5A sized sticks if you have them. them and brushes work well for that light yet hard enough drumbeat to get The jazz sound in your drums. use offbeat and at times random 16th note kicks or a one shot snare or ride cymbal bell shot to highlight and accent your rhythm.. and use some way effects on guitar. don't slap your bass but fingerpick lightly but smooth and steadily in scales of Bm A Fm Em E D Cmaj Dmaj and so on and so on. there plenty more that I haven't mentioned but whatever you do, just have fun and in time, you'll be nailing that genre down. hope this can help, good luck and keep the positive vibes flowing my friend,
