How the hell dose Bitcrusher work?

Bitcursher is very confusing tbh. There is not even a Wiki page for it, which is crazy. Anyway, I just want to automate the amount of "crushing" on an instrument with a marker, so it starts of vary "crushed", and ends up not "crushed" any more. Help would be appreciated.
