The Ascension
There, at the end of everything, death approaching foot by furious foot, Astral feels something against the back of his head, three bouncing taps.
Look.
He does. He sees the second half of the advancing crowd. More gold, more faces, more blades, and, between them, around them, atop them, through them, tessellated once and a trillion times, he sees a bridge - old and cobblestone. It skips across a bubbling creek in the clearing of a thick forest. He can smell the wet of the evening rain in the sunbaked air. He bathes in birdsong.
Look.
He knows he must take a step.
Seconds earlier, at the back of the mob, a teenager from the Mists pushed his way into the backs of the pulsating crowd for a better view. As soon as he can see the fugitives, a beam of brilliant white light strikes down from the sky. Or erupts from the earth. Or both. Or neither. He will never be able to remember which.
What he will remember is that he watched Astral Knightly ascend.
