Moq the Unscathed
Moq had never heard so much noise at once. At first it hurt, swallowing his mind like the tides. What he could see in the cave's dim light became fuzzy. He slapped his hands over his ears to drown it out. The pain lessened, but now there was another sensation, a silent echo in his heart and lungs. And it was... warm, like laying under thick furs by a strong fire.
Moq closed his eyes and focused on this feeling. He felt himself disappear into another cave, one made of endless dark, of all that is not. He slowly spread two fingers to let in more of the noise. Then he heard the voice.
"He is Owa-Dōn," it said.
The Big Zho's lesson rang in his head: "Visakha. The great weapon of evil spirits. Poison words."
Moq closed his eyes tighter to keep the spirits away. They would not take him.
But, he only realized after a few seconds, he didn't put his fingers back together.
The noise was no longer painful. The warmth in his chest grew. The endless dark began to swim with brilliant color that he'd never imagined, that he had no words for.
The voice continued:
"And where he walks
is Owa-Dōn.
And what he speaks
is Owa-Dōn.
And those who follow
are Owa-Dōn."
When he got his words many years later, he would remember this as the most beautiful thing he'd ever heard.
