The Legend of Uilenspiegel is my short English adaptation of an old Flemish folk song, originally titled Tijl Uilenspiegel. It's a bit of a sad song, but I kept it short.
WHO IS TILL UILENSPIEGEL?
------------------------------------
The initial name of the character goes back to 1510, claiming that he was born in 1300, and died of the plague in 1350. It claimed that Uilenspiegel was a jester in the Holy Roman Empire who went from city to city perdorming pranks and jokes, but grew up with a terrible childhood, seeing his father burnt at the stake, and leaving his village because there was nothing left for him there.
LYRICS
----------
The lyrics that follow are entirely created to fit the song, and reflect closely on the original legend, but are not exact translations of the original lyrics. The lyrics, which I have written based on the original lyrics, go as follows:
In the sad Flemish land, when the Spanish men came to pow'r,
There was a Flemish man, whose son was born at the dark hour,
Refrain:
In Vlanderen, in those sorrowful times,
They made a fool of Uilenspiegel
And tried to crush his real soul.
His name was Till, son of Klaus, was born in a coal burner's house.
His father, burnt at stake, a fate that Till would have to take.
Refrain
With Lamme Goedzak, his friend, he left his village, itself to fend
And so, they walked the lands, with nothing but his working hands.
Refrain
And as the years went by, I think of him from time to time.
So, child, I tell you, I never thought of him as a fool.
Refrain (Different):
In Vlanderen, in those sorrowful times,
They made a fool of Uilenspiegel,
But not a word could crush his soul!
