EXCERPT CHAPTER FOR A STORY I"M WRITING:

"One more go!"
"Alright, alright, we'll play 'nother round."
There was an inconspicuous shuffling of cards, drowned out by the sound of the sea battering itself upon the lower decks which went on for several minutes.
"Heh heh, full house!" An unmistakable slap of cards against wood followed this.
"Damn you!"
The burly man laughed heartily again, sweeping up all the copper coins into his equally burly pouch.
"One more play, eh?" The burly man reached into his pouch again, pulling out a half of a pristine, golden-brown sourdough loaf. He gave it a presentative sniff, holding it out in front of the young sailor.
"Me mother's finest, it's the last one I've got."

The young sailor looked upon the bread longingly, flopping back down on his stool, unfazed by the seawater that had splashed onto it a moment ago.
"You're on!"

The 2 sailors engaged in a battle of wits and bluff, playing and verbally cursing each other as if their life depended on it. Neither noticed however, that the bread in question had begun to move, it's short little legs sending it free falling off it's designated table and rolling across the damp plank flooring. It scrambled back onto its feet as it barely dodged the larger, rubbery feet of the crew doing their duties. It scurried off, continuing to avoid passerby as it made its way towards the entryway for the captain's quarters, sweeping it's long pink tail away from another foot as it shot inside the open door.

Once inside the bread stopped moving, flipping to its side with great difficulty to reveal not bread entrails, but a rather average sized rat. It removed itself from the slight divot in the bread it had dug out and now stood on its hindquarters, sniffing the air with its pink nose and crinkling it's brown-and-striped-white coat in anticipation. Wasting no time, it bounded across the floor, jumping and shimmying up the coat sleeve hanging off the table. It slightly skidded to a halt just before the sprawling, yellowed parchment map detailing landmarks and points of interest in the region. The rat's dark glossy eyes sparkled in disciplined interest as it appeared to actually read the map, bounding to and fro to capture more of the information.

Once it seemed satisfied, it turned and scurried towards the door, leaping down and equipping the bread once more. Out of the quarters, it took a quick u-turn down a steep flight of stairs (not steps), skipping every other one and zigzagging to a spot behind it. The rat, hoisting the bread, barely pushed its way through a small opening in a pile of sacks, revealing a chewed through hole into a large crate.

"Thought, did you get to the map?"
A moderately long series of slightly shrill and quiet, almost incomprehensible squeaks sounded from the crate.
"Memory, you getting all this?"
A louder, deeper squeak answered in reply. More shrill squeaks.
"Hm, I don't know much about the seas, but if we're heading where I think we're heading, it can't be anything good. Make sure to keep me posted, 'k?"
A shrill but definitive squeak.
"Hey! Hey, stop chewing on my notebook."
A deeper squeak, almost unmistakable with that of a groan eminated from the crate.
