Most of my song ideas start with one or two lines that come to me as lyrics and a tune together at the same time. On the rare occasions when I do come up with a tune with no lyrics, those songs often go unfinished, as I find it difficult to write lyrics for pre-existing tunes. This song is a rare exception.
"I'll Play Along" began life as a minute-long sequence called "Untitled 23.02.02". Much of the backing track was already created by the time I knew what any of the lyrics were going to be. I finished it up for FAWM (February Ablum Writing Month) 2023, and it's ended up being one of my favorite songs. It's kind of a defense of pessimism-- or at least the idea that *realistic* pessimism is better than unrealistic, blind optimism.
