Written during 50/90 (an online songwriting challenge) in July 2023, "I
Could Not" was my answer to the following prompt: 'Take an old, embarrassing song you wrote years ago, and write the sequel.' I chose a love song called "If I Could", which I wrote in 1992. The lyrics of that song consisted of a list of things I would do for my then-girlfriend, "if I could". So, reflecting on it many years later, it seemed only appropriate (and a little humorous) to call the follow-up "I Could Not". I tried to avoid this sounding like a rejected Creed song... but I could not lol.
